Although most of it has slowed down since the late 1800's, there is still gold being mined in Rockies. Side products (which have since become more important as gold production has declined) include zinc, lead, and galena.
Zinc is used in almost everything, from vitamin supplements to corrosion protection. Lead – even with it's bad reputation – is still used extensively in some industries. And Galena – which is another name for lead sulfide – actually often contains up to 1% silver, making it the most productive ore for obtaining silver.
Although most of the coal deposits of Alberta are under the plains, there is sufficient material to make open-pit mining in the Rockies a money-making proposition. One such mine is the Cheviot Mine, located west of Edmonton and just south of Hinton (to the east of Jasper).
The actual deposits for oil and natural gas are not – strictly speaking – in or under the Rockies. They are in evidence in the lower plains areas adjacent to them (to north, east, south, and west).
Animals are not a "product" of the Rockies either; neither would be the "tourism" associated with mountain climbing and/or skiing.
It was pretty windy up there today! RT Downhill nationals
