How Do I Get A Cheap Mountain Bike Without Getting Ripped Off.?

I need to get a cheap mountain bike (around $100) which I am going to use mostly on beginner trails. I used to ride a bunch outdoors (I worked as a park ranger), but not anymore. I want to get back into things but I will not be super seroius about it. Just need something decent.
I hear that the cheap bikes at Walmart are junk and that I should go to a bike shop. But then all the low end bikes start at $200 and $300.
Any sugestions?

US $60.00

A mountain bike you buy at that price won’t stand up to off road use. Your only way of finding a reasonable bike at the price you can pay would be to find an unbelievably good deal on a second hand bike. If you don’t know much about bikes, you should start doing research to find out what a good bike is like. A cheap bike will end up being more expensive, because parts will break and have to be replaced. Everything will wear out quickly so your bike won’t last long. A good bike can last many years, and end up costing much less on a per year basis. My first good bike lasted 27 years, and was still in good shape when I crashed it and bent the frame. If not for the crash, I might still be riding it today, 10 years later. Low price does not always mean good value.
You won’t get ripped off at a bike shop. You may have to pay more than you want, but that hardly makes it a rip-off. You can find older beaters secondhand for $100, and you might get lucky and find something that’s in pretty good shape. But your expectation to get a new, decent mtb for $100 isn’t realistic, and your comment that $300 is a rip-off is ridiculous.
your right walmarts bikes are junk mine was broken with in a few weeks and i got it fixed and now its not working again. you might want to try Kmart they have a few for under $100http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/s_10151_10104…
Even used, you can’t get anything decent for $100, unless it’s stolen. Figure on at least $200, used. Cheap and decent doesn’t happen in the world of bikes.
And yes, anything from Walmart is junk.
Great day of networking and prognosticating at Stratton Mountain with 90 fun ACG folks.
I think I may have encountered the wackest game of all time this week. It's getting beyond ridiculous. I need an axe or a clean slate…
Mayor Sara Presler likes that the contract is going to a local – not "going down the mountain" a reference to Valley-based Plaza Companies.
Getting gas at 11:45 in when its 24 degress outside…that's what I a good time.
For 2 grand you can get alot of bike, see here for my suggestion:
Now seriously look at the specs on this bike and then look at the specs on this one too: and compare these to your Trek or Spec. Not to mention there is a 20% off deal coming up this weekend too and you can also get an additional 10% back (of your total purchase) if you sign up as a Team Performance member too. No one else gives you that! Really good bikes too! Another point to make is this: At any price point (such as $2000) nearly all makes and models are the "best" for what you get. The only differences are, Name and components. A 2k GT for instance may have a Rock Shox fork on it and a Stumpjumper may have a Specialized fork on it and both will have all Shimano SLX components, so what do you want on the side of your fork? Dont beat yourself up on this one, go for the best bang for your buck, you WILL get a decent bike no matter at that price point.
1976 King Kong looks cheap and cheesey. Imagine a big black dude dressed in a suit picking up a white chick. Who'd believe that..

Like the first poster said, it really depends on the dog. But you would do well to just make sure you have a proper fitting lid for your tank. Preferably, its an exo terra tank because I have two of them and I can vouch that they are AMAZING cages and yes, completely escape proof. But I understand that they are pretty expensive so this may not be a favorable option.
But, assuming that somehow your snake gets out even with your best efforts at providing a secure enclosure.. Well, my German Shepherd has seen my snakes when I'm holding them, and he is more afraid/curious than aggressive. I think most animals have an instinct to be afraid of snakes. I'm not saying all dogs are like this, but thats just what I know from experience.

Ride Like a Girl! GETTING GEARED UP FOR A RIDE To go out for a bike ride, you basically need two things – yourself and a bike. Here are some ideas to make the best out of your ride… for you… -HELMET: Always wear a helmet. This is the most important item that you’ll need for a safe and enjoyable ride. Be sure that the chin strap is buckled and that the helmet is covering your forehead and not sitting too far back on your head. Wear a bicycle helmet that is less than 5 years old, as the environment degrades the helmet’s protection over time. – CLOTHING: Dress for the weather. Dress appropriately for the current conditions, however conditions change rapidly so be prepared with an extra layer. Wearing comfortable shorts really does make a difference, especially on longer rides. (Hint: wear your shorts without undies, as the chamois was designed to be next to your skin.) High tech fabrics are a good investment if you ride often as they will provide wicking properties in the warm summer…
