For distance riding (assuming mostly on pavement) you want a touring bike or hybrid.

Emergency crews were on the scene of a small plane crash near a rural Northern California airport.
A spokesman for the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says crews responded to a crash of a single-engine plane around 7:20 p.m. Friday just outside the Pine Mountain Lake Airport, a small airport near the community of Groveland.
Preliminary information from the Federal Aviation Administration says a Piper Saratoga crashed and was destroyed by impact and fire. FAA officials believe two people were on board, with the plane heading from San Carlos to Pine Mountain Lake Airport.
A local newspaper, the Union Democrat, reports the plane crashed into a fenced area near a house. Pieces of the plane were strewn across the property, but residents inside the home were not injured.
Groveland is about 25 miles south of Yosemite National Park.

IMHO i think the best road bike would be a ZZR600E (ZX6) they are hugely practical fast (160mph) comfortable strongly built with kwak build quality and parts are easily sourced as they are a very long running model. it's classed as a sports tourer so should be a little cheaper on insurance too, expect around 40mpg and £2000 (circa $3200) should get a very clean low mileage unmolested example

The bigger freeride bikes are expensive if you want one that wont snap in half. Expect to pay a minimum of round £1500 for a decent one. The BMXs are much cheaer. You can pick up a decent bmx for around £300. Im not sure how much they are in dollars, i live in England. Hope that helepd a bit anyway
